The thermodynamic water heater

Satisfactory cleaning of a milk cooling tank (and milking equipment) should normally be done with a hot detergent solution. On the farm, hot water is not always readily available and its preparation involves an energy cost that is increasing.

The heat extracted from the milk is lost to the environment in the condenser of the refrigeration unit.

Some might think that if a heat exchanger is placed in the pipe from the compressor to the condenser through which the hot refrigerant vapour flows, it is possible to partially recover the heat.

Current heat recovery units consist of a refrigerant-water heat exchanger of varying complexity. The simplest type is a coil immersed in a water chamber in which the hot refrigerant circulates. The vapours of the latter reach at least 80°C. The recuperator acts partly as a condenser.

As soon as the milk from the first milking arrives in the direct expansion tank, the refrigeration unit is switched on. The condensation of the refrigerant quickly exceeds that of the water in the recuperator.

After a certain period of operation (20-30 minutes) the two temperatures equalise and then reverse. This is because the water in the recuperator has warmed up and the condensation temperature has decreased according to a curve that approximately follows the temperature of the milk. The heat recovery is then much lower and the water temperature stabilises fairly quickly. In the end, the recovery is about 30% of the total amount of heat released, which is approximately 45% of the heat coming from the milk. In subsequent milkings the amount of heat recovered is even lower because the condensation temperature is lower as the temperature of the hot milk + chilled milk mixture is lower than in the first milking. OPTIMISED HOT WATER PRODUCTION

The tank of the storage tank is made up of two layers of polypropylene between which a polyurethane foam is injected to ensure perfect insulation of the water heater.

In the tank, a ringed stainless steel heat exchanger with a capacity of approximately 29L is placed throughout the height of the accumulator to guarantee perfect stratification and optimise the production of hot water.

Unlike traditional storage tanks, the hot water to be consumed is not stored in the storage tank.

SEMI-INSTANTANEOUS HOT WATER PRODUCTION

The ECOTRAITE thermodynamic water heater is equipped with direct condensation technology and has 2 stainless steel exchangers: the first is dedicated to the production of domestic hot water, the second to store energy.

The storage tank is filled, at the time of installation, with water known as “technical water”. This water “stores” the energy and will later release it to heat the domestic hot water.

The cold mains water enters the storage tank via the second coil exchanger and is heated by the technical water contained in the storage tank, according to the semi-instantaneous production principle.

Quality water

The absence of water storage has a strong influence on the quality of the water produced; it is more hygienic and eliminates any risk of legionella. The hot water temperature can be lowered to 48°C to increase the system’s performance.
